About the Book

Sweet Gratitude is an irresistible collection of quick and easy recipes for desserts and other sweets designed especially for giving. The recipes are simple enough for even the beginner—Brown Sugar Shortbread, for example, takes about five minutes to put together—but experienced bakers will find more unusual treats, such as Chocolate-Espresso Sandwich Cookies and Apple Brown Butter Crostata, to delight them too. There are mouthwatering versions of beloved comfort food, such as Chocolate Fudge Cake and Ginger-Peach Upside-Down Cake, along with sophisticated but equally indulgent desserts like Whipped Chocolate Tart and Berry Tartlets with Sweet Mascarpone. Many of the recipes include variations, and all of them include make-ahead instructions. In fact, because the recipes are designed for giving, all of them can be prepared entirely ahead of time—a plus for any busy home cook, whether baking a gift for a friend or making a special treat for her (or his) own family.

Fifty charming and whimsical watercolor illustrations by artist Mariko Jesse add to the appeal of Sweet Gratitude. And along with the recipes, there are notes about ingredients (all readily found in the supermarket) and techniques; tips on storing, as well as on packing and shipping for long-distance giving; and creative suggestions for wrapping or presenting the seventy delectable pies and tarts, cakes, cookies, confections, and sauces found in the book. Sweet Gratitude provides the recipes for home-baked "thank-you's" for all the important people in your life, and the book itself would be a delightful gift for any baker.
